Heir Hunters in England and Germany helped unravel the case of Jozef Domanski, a former Worcestershire textile worker from Kidderminster who died without leaving a will and the search for a next of kin took seven years of extensive research and work.

On the afternoon of Aug. 22, 2015, Dale Tisserand and Melani Rodrigue opened the front door to a small white house in Corning, Calif., a town of 7,500 about 115 miles north of Sacramento. The women, who’d been given the keys by local police, are investigators for the office of the Tehama County Public Administrator. They knew the owner had died in the house the previous week and that his name was Eugene Brown.

When a distant family relative dies without a will, relatives in line for an inheritance may rely on the work of probate researchers or genealogy companies. Their detective work, the subject of the BBC’s Heir Hunters, ensures unclaimed money ends up with the relatives rather than the Crown.
